Age: 21

Team: FC St. Gallen

Where do you play?

Currently I play for FC St. Gallen. I joined the first team five years ago. Before that, I often played football with boys in my free time.

What benefits did you receive from playing with boys?

Adapting to the speed of the game. Boys tend to play much faster than girls at the same age. Not only by moving the ball faster but also running and sprinting. Another benefit for me was getting used to physical opponents. Boys bodies are stronger and more developed.

So, would you suggest for girls to play with boys?

Yes, for sure! I would suggest for girls to play amongst boys for as long as possible before making the move to women’s football.

What do you feel is lacking in women’s football?

Well I think the infrastructure needs to be developed. Four years ago, we were set up like corporate football. I know that money plays a large role but the infrastructure needs to be better.

What do you do outside of football?

Currently I am studying at the university of St. Gallen. I am in my 6th semester and I find it important to combine sport and education.

What are your plans for the future?

I plan on going abroad to continue my studies. At the moment, it looks like I will be heading to San Diego in August. I am really looking forward to it. There might be the possibility for me to play football there too. That would be a bonus as I want to continue to play for as long as possible.

What about after the U.S?

Well, I will likely want to do my Masters in an area such as marketing. If I have the time I would also like to travel and see more of the world. However, I don’t have any definite plans and want to wait and see what the future holds.

What is a necessity for you?

I think to be able to be my own person. I like to be independent.

I heard that you wear G-Form shin-pads. Is that correct?

Yes, I love them. I’ve had them now for two years and I can only recommend them to others. They are very practical and don’t move whilst playing. I also like how they are one piece so I don’t need any tape or sock to hold them in place.

The Voxplay team would like to thank Melina for her commitment and time in giving this interview. All the best Melina!
