FIFPro has hosted a meeting of a newly-established task force which is looking into concerns about the health and performance of footballers in an increasingly congested competition calendar. Subjects discussed included the risk of injury to leading footballers because of their busy schedule, the length of mid-season and off-season breaks, the international match calendar of FIFA and international travel arrangements for both men’s and women’s football.   The task force consists of senior union officials Bobby Barnes (England), Steven Bryce (Costa Rica), Stephane Burchkalter (France), John...

At 61, Shinobu Fukushima is the oldest ice hockey player at the Winter Paralympics - but the Japanese goaltender laughs off the suggestion that he might retire any time soon.   Para-ice hockey sees players with leg impairments strapped into double-bladed sledges, and they then use two short sticks to zip around the rink and shoot. Switzerland's Beat Feuz finished ahead of Olympic champion Aksel Lund Svindal to win the season-long World Cup downhill title on Wednesday in Are, Sweden.   Austrian teammates Vincent Kriechmayr and Matthias Mayer shared the race win at the World Cup finals, finishing 4-100ths of a second ahead of Feuz and 12-100ths ahead of Norway's Svindal. In the discipline standings, Feuz ended up 70 points ahead of Svindal, thanks in large part to his victories in Lake Louise, Alta, Wengen and Garmisch-Partenkirchen.   He becomes the first Swiss racer to claim the title since Didier Cuche won the...

Lewis Hamilton has dismissed criticism from former Mercedes team mate Nico Rosberg as the product of someone seeking "headlines".   Rosberg, who beat Hamilton to the 2016 world championship before retiring, told Sky Sports this week that the Briton was "almost unbeatable" when on song but his "weakness" was a "bit of inconsistency". Hamilton, whose long-standing relationship with Rosberg grew strained during their four years together at the Silver Arrows, viewed the German's remarks dimly three days before Sunday's season-opening Australian Grand Prix.   "I think I've proved that that's...

Female Players Quitting Before Their Prime

While women’s football has increased in profile in recent years, 87 percent of players surveyed by FIFPro say they may end up cutting short their career. Research shows teams with the best results in international tournaments are those with the higher average ages.
